Just like most things in life, when computer generated imagery is done badly, everyone notices it. But sadly, when they do botch up the CGI in a movie, it immediately transports you away from that fantasy world and back into your living room, leaving you thinking: "that was the worst CGI scorpion I have ever seen" and thus ruining the movie. But when CGI is done well enough to not look like a plastic man fighting a bunch of other plastic men, it can really pull you in to the story and leave you forgetting that you've just been watching a whole load of CGI. So with that said here are some Hollywood VFX You Didn't Notice Were CGI Logan Unlike past X-Men movies, Logan doesn't really have many huge scale VFX scenes and perhaps that's what makes it all the more believable. Aside from a few digital backgrounds, the VFX were mainly used to achieve smaller things like the impossible but very realistic looking self healing skin. They were also used to give wolverine's little clone, Laura, realistic looking adamantium claws, just like him. And speaking of claws, CGI was used to achieve those impressive blows that he delivers to the bad guys with his adamantium claws, only this time, unlike the laughably fake previous versions we've had the misfortune to witness in the past, they did them justice. 2012 Any good disaster movie pretty much relies on CGI to create those huge scenes of general chaos. And in the movie 2012 there are more than 500 of them. Many VFX moments in the movie demanded huge computing power and most of these scenes were multi layered, meaning they consisted of several different graphics that were later combined to make up the scene in a realistic way, like, for example, when the plane is flying between falling buildings. And due to the high demand in computing power for the sheer amount of CGI needed, they used bout 250 of the most powerful computers at the time to process all of these graphics. Actors were filmed in front to blue screens and some of the sets were designed to shake to realistically simulate an earthquake. This blend of real footage and high quality CGI really helped to keep things looking believable. Game Of Thrones One of the most epic scenes in Game Of Thrones was when Daenerys, along with a horde of Dothraki (and a dragon) completely destroyed a Lannister army. This scene was challenging to shoot because despite the logical assumption that most of this scene is going to be CGI (cos, you know, trying to film a real dragon would be kinda impractical) most of the scenery was actually real and explosions were actually real! The creators actually went all out and took the time to set fire to several extras as well as blow up the wagons with carefully placed charges. They even used real ash to simulate the charred remains of the Lannister army. This all added to the realism of the scene, leaving any major CGI work for the dragon. To get Daenerys to blend with the dragon, they made a real mechanical rig and filmed Emilia Clarke riding it in front of a green screen. Then they simply superimposed her onto their 3D dragon. For the scenery; Shots from behind the dragon were done with special cameras mounted on cables and drones. This left a very real backdrop for them to more easily superimpose on Daenerys and the dragon over the top, giving a very realistic end result. Spiderman: Homecoming Despite the actor Tom Holland doing all his own stunts, or the fact that many of the scenes were made in the filming set without CGI and yes, they also made a full size replica of a ferry that they filled with water and balanced with the help of special mechanisms, it didn't mean that Spiderman Homecoming was completely CGI free. Aside from the obvious scenes, like the interface of the spidy suit, for example, the scene where Spiderman climbs the Washington monument was in fact aided heavily with CGI as the actor wasn't allowed to climb the real thing on his own so they built several replica chunks of it for Tom to climb in front of a green screen and then superimposed it onto a Washington backdrop. San Andreas In order to destroy the state of California, artists had to work had recreating more than 1300 scenes with special effects for the movie, such as the destruction of the Hoover Dam, a ton of falling buildings, an impressive wave that wiped out the city of San Fran and also the destruction of the Golden Gate Bridge and no, they didn't do it by filming a bucket of water being tipped over a tiny model replica. The VFX artists in this movie made a huge effort to achieve such highly realistic results, and even combining between 4 to and 15 images of the same place and even mixing together CGI with real photographs, all in order to achieve this highly immersive disaster movie, that keeps you clutching your seat all throughout the movie. Behind concealed screens is the Doctor's little workshop, featuring numerous keepsakes and paraphernalia from previous adventures. How many old props can you spot? It seems logical to me that the internal architecture should not rely on the external configuration, and I have never warmed to the idea that the Police Box boors could be the proper TARDIS external doors. Therefore in my version, the ship has proper inner doors to seal us from the outside dimensions. I hope you enjoy this walk around my design and I look forward to your comments as ever!

Check out this insightful making of the "Elephant In The Room" a 60 second TV spot by ABF Pictures for online bathroom retailer Soak.com. The advert, directed by Matt Barraclough, features a girl (played by Brooke Carter) imagining a baby elephant arriving at her home with the family’s new bathroom. http://www.abfpictures.co.uk http://www.soak.com Music Composed and performed by Tim Follin for ABF Pictures Director: Matt Barraclough Animation / Rigging / Compositing: Joe Spademan Elephant creation / LookDev / Rendering: Jonathan Macdonald Rendered at RenderNation (http://rendernation.com/) Work on the baby elephant “Tully” began with the CGI team (Joe Spademan and Jonathan Macdonald) taking a research trip to Chester zoo where the youngest Asian ElephantsNandita” and “Indali” became the inspiration for Tully in the ad. The pair used reference photos and videos taken at the zoo to get Tully looking right in the ad. On set they used a 1:1 stand in prop for Tully’s head and captured HDR images with a Ricoh Theta 360 camera in preparation for animation and compositing into the ad. To create Tully Joe and Jon used a combination of Maya, ZBrush, Mari, Yeti, Substance Painter and After Effects. Tully was sculpted by Jon in ZBrush and textured in Mari with 240 8K texture maps covering 14 UDIMS on the baby elephants body as well as a hair system simulated in Yeti. Tully was then rigged and animated by Joe in Maya before being rendered with Arnold at RenderNation in Liverpool. They used Yeti for the elephant’s hair as it gave procedural control over through it’s node editor, this saved time on building the groom which was then attached to Tully after the animation was complete in each shot. The texture maps for Tully were created in Mari and Substance painter using both hand drawn and photo-referenced textures for diffuse, specular, subsurface and displacement maps. Mari’s warp tool was particularly useful in fitting the textures to the elephant model. Tully was rigged and animated in Maya with custom controllers built specifically for his trunk and tail movement, nHair follicles for ear movement and MEL scripted toe spread animation to help sell the shots as real. His trunk needed to be able to flop, stretch, swing, grab and twist like a real elephant’s trunk so getting this right was key for making Tully believable. One particular challenge was a shot with Tully squirting water at the girl. They wanted the water splash to be real so she could react naturally. To make this match the CG Tully they 3D printed the end of his trunk from the ZBrush mesh and adapted a water pump which was then motion matched from the footage and replaced by the animated Tully. This meant that they could squirt the water with a genuine reaction from the girl and then composite the shot so it looks like Tully was squirting the water himself. At the end of the ad we see bathroom and hallway lights getting switched off, so it was important to make sure that the lights in Maya matched the shots that were filmed. They made a digital version of the set to bounce light back onto Tully as it would if he were really there and to catch the shadows and reflections from the elephant, HDR images that were taken on set helped get the reflections correct, which made a subtle but important addition to us being able to get the end result right in the comp. ———————————————————— WHO EXACTLY ARE THECGBROS? - http://bit.ly/2bzGzYQ ———————————————————— Thanks for SUBSCRIBING -http://bit.ly/2c8Fl8u TheCGBros Newsletter- http://tinyurl.com/j5njcxd Web - TheCGBros http://www.thecgbros.com YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/TheCGBro Facebook https://www.facebook.com/TheCGBro Twitter https://twitter.com/TheCGBros Google+ https://plus.google.com/104301021746334584641 Pinterest https://www.pinterest.com/TheCGBros/ Tumblr http://thecgbros.tumblr.com/ ———————————————————— Special Thank's to formaDISSENY for making our logo intro animation!! http://www.formadisseny.com/en/ ———————————————————— If you’re a CGI ARTIST, ANIMATOR, FILM MAKER or STUDIO and would like your project showcased on our TheCGBros please visit http://bit.ly/2byguiS ———————————————————— TheCGBros have permission to broadcast this video and or it is part of Creative Commons the http://creativecommons.org/licenses/b.... Every evil overlord and criminal mastermind needs a surveillance room to see just how badly their minions are holding their own against intruders... 3ds Max project, the room is CGI only. Comment or like if you like what you see. I needed to do 30 second 3d animation for my 3ds Max course at Metropolia UAS. It was supposed to be "a room", but modeling my living room never really sounded as interesting as modeling your classic survaillance room that has my old videos running on screens as survaillance footage. I tried to keep the room relatively low poly to shorten the render time. The whole scene only has 4 000 or so polys. The videos playing on the screens are all made by me and can be found on my Youtube channel. The videos used are; Jedi Knight, Exile | Star Wars Fan Film The Reign Over Regime HD - Epic Shootout & Massive Battle Dark God Rises | VFX Short Iron Sky, Moon Nazis | Fan Film Business As Usual | Attic Showdown The Binary Choice | Basement Assault Ice Fishing With Grenades | Fisherman's Friend Spoof The Clone Reel | M.I.L.F Troopers The Cuckoo Reel | M.I.L.F Troopers II Hantieren's End | Gunfight & Vengeance As a statement, I for one strongly support the idea of extending the fair use of copyrighted music to non-profit short films. I don't really see why one should pay some $3000 in copyright payments when the project itself is non-profit and zero budget. Just a really quickly video showing the benefits of the improved workflow for incorporating live action footage into my UE4 project. Test made as part of a colloboration with the Starfleet Studios fanfilm team. The issue with the footage and alpha channel (cut out shape of the characters) going out of sync is resolved. Also tested the ability to dynamically occlude the footage (ingame character walks in front of the footage as it plays).

Check out this fantastic CGI Making of, by the talented team at Hybride Technologies! Hybride Technologies, is a division of Ubisoft, and delivers state-of-the-art digital imagery and stereoscopic expertise for the film and TV industries worldwide. For the cockpit HUDS (Heads-Up Displays), Hybride’s graphic designers were faced with the challenge of creating visual signatures for graphics to help identify each robot’s country of origin, allowing audiences to instantly recognize Jaegers. To achieve this effect, Hybride’s team of artists created a series of colour and graphic styles specific to each country’s robot. For the 2012 and 2023 versions of the American Jaeger, Gipsy Danger, Hybride produced arm grid and hand disk holograms around the pilot suits. The team also designed and created motion graphics for control room monitors and also designed and integrated the holographic television screens and computer monitors seen throughout the film.
